The latest Tune in to FM seminar hosted by FSI at the Natural History Museum on Friday 11th November, focussed on UK and Global Facilities Management, as well as past, present and future career trends in the industry. 

The seminar, chaired by FSI's Senior Business Solutions Adviser Vaughan Sparkes, opened with a presentation by John Davis, Managing Director of Facilities Recruitment Limited.  John drew on his wealth of experience, discussing career trends in the FM industry, plus the work of Facilities Recruitment Limited.  John highlighted the skills shortage in the industry, with an increasing need for new FM staff, or existing FM staff to remain in their roles long past the retirement age.  Most FM staff aren't moving jobs for less than a 15-20% pay increase, whilst 35% of the Facilities Managers in London feel their job is unsafe.  Facilities Recruitment Limited estimates that 3,000 new FM staff is needed in the next 18 months, and because FM Contracts/budget sizes are getting bigger, this requires more competent financial management than ever before.

This was followed with a presentation by Tuomo Komulainen, system Manager for YIT.  A construction and engineering company with over 20,000 employees based in Finland, YIT has net sales of 3,0 billion € (2004) and operating profit of about 1,35 billion € (2004).  YIT's clients include (a) Investors, dealing with invest value, maintenance levels and repairing debt, (b) Building Owners, dealing with professional and cost effective maintenance, reporting and life cycle services, and (c) Building Users, dealing with good environments and good services.  It is therefore vital that YIT have a good CAFM application to fulfil their clients' demands.  FSI's flagship Concept™ 500 solution has been used at YIT since 1999, and is able to link seamlessly with their clients' systems, including reporting databases and mobile solutions.

Mick Dalton, Marketing Director at George S Hall Ltd and Chairman of the BIFM, was next to present, discussing a view of the global FM world, plus the work of the BIFM.  Mick discussed how globalisation will continue in the FM industry, whilst multinational customers will continue to demand global best practice across all their operations.  There is a need for a centralised management and/or delivery of multiple-country FM operations. To successfully meet the needs of the local/global industry, we must optimise local expertise, by offering support with global knowledge, and address any multicultural barriers in order to succeed.  The FM future is Asia, but we must be careful of the cultural, linguistic and geographic variables, whilst the lack of global standards and common definitions impedes benchmarking and promotion of universal best practices.

Finally, FSI's Irenee Van Den Ende, Implementation Consultant and Project Manager at The Natural History Museum, discussed Facilities Management at the museum, and the use of Concept™ at site.  Irenee's passionate speech included the history of the impressive building, as well as how the Estates Department have to balance the management of three million visitors a year with the maintenance and conservation of the museum and its artefacts.  The museum originally installed FSI's Concept™ system back in 1996, and it is used for call logging, room booking and as an eSQL self delivery function.  The Concept™ Asbestos module keeps those potentially dangerous substances safe and at a distance, whilst the implementation of the Concept™ Workflow module to automate business processes is on the horizon.

Developed and hosted by Concept™ CAFM developers FSI (FM Solutions) Ltd, the Tune in to FM seminar series was established in 2004 to promote dialogue between users and systems developers.  The free seminar series not only encourages the sharing of best practice between delegates from a wide range of industry sectors, but also brings to the fore the latest developments within the FM industry.

Now in its second year, the series kicked off its 2005 programme at the Ministry of Defence's headquarters in Whitehall on 8th April.  Subsequent events followed at Anglia Polytechnic University (10th June) and Airbus UK Bristol (8th September). 

"The success of the Tune in to FM series has been phenomenal," explains Compton Darlington, FSI's Business Development Director. "Obviously we were acutely aware of the need for a specific platform to be developed; one that would not only promote a better understanding of asset management and transparency of FM services across industry sectors, but also allow the exchange of ideas, experiences and even frustrations to ultimately enhance working environments.  But we have been truly surprised at the levels of interest from prospective attendees."
